EOS

At San Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, we’re proud to offer the EOSedge system—the next generation in low-dose, full-body imaging for spinal and orthopaedic conditions.

Using two co-linked X-ray tubes and Nobel Prize-winning detector technology, EOSedge delivers highly accurate, high-resolution images of the spine and lower limbs while significantly reducing radiation exposure. The entire examination is fast and simple, taking only 10 to 25 seconds to complete. Patients are able to stand comfortably during the scan, and the open, upright cabin design provides a more relaxed experience—especially helpful for children and older patients.

Your doctor may request additional views such as flexion, extension, or a specialised pre-operative hip exam. These will be clearly guided by our experienced radiographers. If your referral has come from a chiropractor, physiotherapist, podiatrist, or other allied health professional, our radiographers will also perform specific postural measurements to support your ongoing treatment plan.

For patients requiring frequent imaging—particularly children with scoliosis—we offer Micro Dose scanning, which provides ultra-low radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic clarity.

We accept all referrals from GPs, specialists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals. We offer bulk billed Medicare claimable EOS scans and accept both walk ins and appointments Monday to Saturday.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EOS Edge?

The EOSedge system is a revolutionary imaging platform designed for fast, upright, whole-body imaging with a dramatically reduced radiation dose. EOSedge captures simultaneous frontal and lateral plane images of the patient in a standing, weight-bearing position, giving clinicians a true-to-life view of the spine, hips, pelvis, and lower limbs under natural loading conditions.

Key features:

  • Quick scans: Less than 15 seconds for adults, less than 5 seconds for children
  • Open design for improved comfort and accessibility
  • Advanced platform to raise patients smoothly into position
  • Ideal for spinal and orthopaedic assessment and surgical planning

How is EOS different to conventional x-ray?

EOSedge uses two linked X-ray sources to capture both front and side views simultaneously while you're in a standing position. This provides more functional and accurate information about posture, alignment, and joint loading, all while significantly lowering radiation dose.

Functional Imaging in Real-Life Positions

EOSedge allows patients to be scanned while standing, sitting, or bending, offering insight into how posture, gravity, and movement affect spinal alignment and joint relationships. This is invaluable for assessing complex spinal conditions or preparing for orthopaedic surgery.

High-Quality 2D and 3D Modelling

From a single scan, EOSedge generates 3D models of the spine and lower limbs, delivering detailed clinical data that is not possible with traditional radiography. This technology enhances surgical planning and enables more accurate diagnosis and tracking of musculoskeletal disorders.

Tailored for Allied Health Referrals

For referrals from chiropractors, physiotherapists, or podiatrists, our radiographers include precise postural and alignment measurements, supporting your allied health practitioner in delivering optimal care.

What conditions are best imaged with EOS?

  • Scoliosis (especially paediatric)
  • Kyphosis and other spinal deformities
  • Degenerative spine conditions
  • Leg length discrepancies
  • Lower limb and pelvic misalignments
  • Pre- and post-operative orthopaedic evaluations

How long does an EOS scan take?

Most EOSedge scans take between 10 and 25 seconds depending on the number of views. It’s quick, efficient, and designed for comfort.

Can children be safely scanned using EOSedge?

Yes. EOSedge is exceptionally safe for children, especially those with scoliosis, thanks to its Micro Dose feature. It offers ultra-low radiation exposure ideal for follow-up exams.

What does it feel like to have an EOS scan?

The scan is painless. You’ll stand inside a spacious, open cabin while the machine moves smoothly around you. A radiographer will help position you and guide you through any extra postures like bending or sitting if required.

Who can refer me for an EOS scan?

We accept all referrals from GPs, specialists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals. We offer bulk billed EOS scans that meet claimable Medicare criteria and accept walk ins and appointments Monday to Saturday. Allied health referrals include posture and alignment measurements to support treatment planning.
